Leather shoes have a white/salt powder coming from them?

I have shoes I really like. and they have hard leather and soft leather parts. The soft leather part keeps developing a white powder film (salt?). I keep polishing them - how can I stop it ruining my shoe?Leather shoes have a white/salt powder coming from them?
Sounds like salt. I used to get that too when wearing my black boots/shoes in the snow in Vermont. As long as you keep polishing them, they should be fine. I had my boots for 6 years without any wear to the leather! I think the white is superficial and just looks bad more than anything.
