scarlett --- The store frosting should be fine for icing the cake. For the decoration's
you might need to thicken it up some.
Especially if you are making flowers such as roses. If you find that you do need to thicken it some, use powder sugar. And be sure to sift it first and just use the sugar that goes through the sifter by shaking it. If you force it through the sifter you will get some very small grains of sugar that will give you trouble making flowers.
I hope this will help you. jim bI am using store frosting to dec a cake,,and i am coloring it do i need to use powder sugar, for any reason?

No
you shouldn't have to. try to use a paste food colouring, they work better for icing.
Nope, just add the food coloring until you get the color you want.
You should only have to add a small amount of colouring. No need to add the sugar.

If the frosting is already made and you're not wanting to do something ';special'; with the frosting, I don't think you'll need additional powdered sugar.
If you have decorating questions, you might want to take a look at www.wilton.com I realize that Wilton isn't the final word on cake decorating but they're a good place to start.
Good luck!
